An island off the south coast of Australia,
with an area of 26,380 sq.miles it is
separated from that continent by the 310 ml.
wide Bass Strait. It is named after Abel
Tasman-the Dutch Navigator who discovered it
in 1642. Originally called Van Dieman's Land,
it was renamed in his honour in 1856. It
joined the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
Hobart is the capital and the main port is
Launceston. The main products are wool, dairy
products, fruit, timber, coal, copper,
silver, tin and iron.
