  3. with an area of 26,380 sq.miles it is
  4. separated from that continent by the 310 ml.
  5. wide Bass Strait. It is named after Abel
  6. Tasman-the Dutch Navigator who discovered it
  7. in 1642. Originally called Van Dieman's Land,
  8. it was renamed in his honour in 1856. It 
  9. joined the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
  10. Hobart is the capital and the main port is
  11. Launceston. The main products are wool, dairy
  12. products, fruit, timber, coal, copper,
  13. silver, tin and iron.
